Early Beginnings

The concept for Genesis began in 2003, when Hyundai aimed to break into the luxury car market dominated by brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus. Hyundai released the Hyundai Genesis sedan in 2008 as a high-end model under the Hyundai brand. It offered a luxurious driving experience at a relatively affordable price compared to its competitors, and it featured high-end materials, advanced technologies, and performance-oriented powertrains.

The Hyundai Genesis was successful and well-received, especially in markets like North America, where it won awards such as the North American Car of the Year in 2009. This model laid the groundwork for Hyundai's plans to develop a separate luxury brand.

Genesis as a Standalone Brand (2015)

In November 2015, Hyundai officially launched Genesis Motors as an independent luxury brand, aiming to compete with premium brands such as BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz. The brand's vision was to deliver a world-class luxury experience combined with modern, innovative technology and design.

The first vehicle launched under the Genesis brand was the Genesis G90 (also called EQ900 in South Korea), a full-size luxury sedan that debuted in December 2015. It was the successor to the Hyundai Equus, a premium model that Hyundai had previously offered. The G90 was praised for its refined design, impressive comfort, and advanced safety features.

Expansion of the Genesis Lineup

After the launch of the G90, Genesis expanded its lineup with the introduction of other models:

  • Genesis G80 (2016): A mid-size luxury sedan that replaced the original Hyundai Genesis sedan. It became one of the brand's best-selling models, offering a blend of luxury, technology, and performance.
  • Genesis G70 (2017): A compact luxury sedan designed to compete with models like the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. The G70 received critical acclaim for its dynamic driving experience, design, and value proposition, earning several prestigious awards, including the 2019 North American Car of the Year.

Design Philosophy and Identity

Genesis is known for its distinctive design language called "Athletic Elegance." The brand's vehicles are characterized by sleek lines, a prominent crest grille, and high attention to detail, both inside and outside the cars. Hyundai established a dedicated design studio for Genesis, and in 2016, the brand appointed the renowned automotive designer Luc Donckerwolke as its Executive Vice President of Design, further establishing its design prowess.

SUV Expansion and Electrification

In response to growing consumer demand for luxury SUVs, Genesis introduced its first SUV, the Genesis GV80, in 2020. The GV80 was a significant milestone, as it was the brand's first non-sedan offering. Shortly after, the smaller Genesis GV70 was launched, adding more versatility to the lineup.

Genesis also committed to sustainability and electrification in line with global automotive trends. In 2021, the brand announced that it would go fully electric by 2030. Its first electric vehicle, the Genesis Electrified G80, was introduced in 2021, marking its entry into the growing luxury EV market.

Global Expansion

Initially, Genesis focused on key markets such as South Korea, North America, and the Middle East, but it gradually expanded its presence in other regions like Europe, Australia, and China. The brand's blend of luxury, performance, and cutting-edge technology has helped it gain traction in the highly competitive luxury segment.
